So here is blog # 7 written on October 23rd as we near the end of our trip. The time has gone fast and has been mostly enjoyable but I miss home and certain grandchildren so much that Bill decided we would shorten the trip from 9 weeks to 8. Since my last blog entry we have covered a lot of miles and seen a lot of things. We are currently in Indiana just east of Chicago. To get to this point since October 10th, we have travelled through several states and seen a lot of different scenery. From Mt. St. Helen’s area in Washington we drove to Crown Point RV Park in Corbett, Oregon. It was located on the Columbia River Gorge on old scenic highway 30. To get there from the main highway, we had to go up a long, narrow, steep winding road. (Bill did very well but I was all nerves!!!). While camped there, we took the Jetta along the rest of highway 30 to see the Crown Point State Vista which overlooks the Columbia River Gorge. (Beautiful!!!) Then we continued on to see several lovely waterfalls including the tallest at 620 feet the Multnomah Falls. [...]

Hi again…this is blog entry #6 and day 40 of our trip. We will be away for Thanksgiving but plan to have a turkey dinner on Monday. I hope you all have a Happy Thanksgiving…. Since my last entry we spent another lovely day with the Haggmans. They drove us to Tacoma where we went to the Glass Museum. Then we went back to their house and shared a delicious meal with Kurt, Debbie, and 2 of their kids, Eric and Lindsey as well as Lindsey’s boyfriend Scott. Their daughter Angela lives with her husband in Vancouver so they weren’t able to be there. From Seattle, we drove to the Olympic Peninsula in northwest Washington were we spent 3 nights in Sequim (pronounced Skwim) and 2 nights in Mora. While we were in Sequim, we visited Port Townshend a quaint Victorian style village built on the side of a mountain on the Strait of Juan de Fuca. We also drove up into the Olympic Mountains along Hurricane Ridge and the next day to Sol Duc Falls where we hiked along several trails. The next 2 nights we camped in an RV resort near the town of Forks. Some of you [...]

Well time flies when you’re having fun; or so they say. I can’t believe it’s been 10 days since my last blog entry. I am keeping a written daily journal but there are too many unnecessary details in it to bore you with. So I will try to summarize what we’ve been up to. The day of my last entry we went to visit Lewis and Clark Caverns. They were amazing and so different from the other caves we have visited. For example they were not as “touristy”. We had to climb a steep path for about ½ hour to reach the cave entrance. Once inside the vertical cave, the pathway was more natural as opposed to being a boardwalk. We even had to slide down a 4 ft. slide to get from 1 level to another. The stalactites and stalagmites and columns were beautiful as were the colours. Check out the photos to see what I mean. Between there and Seattle, WA, where we are currently camped, we stayed in 4 other places in Montana and Washington. While in Missoula, Montana then Spokane, WA we didn’t do too much except wander around their waterfront parks. Both were very nice [...]

Hi again everyone. This is Blog entry #4 and today is Day 22 of our trip. We are now camped at Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park in Montana. Taking the rest of today off to play catch up and rest up after several very active days. After we left Devil’s Tower we went to Hardin KOA in Wyoming. While there, we visited the site of The Battle of Little Big Horn which is also known as Custer’s Last Stand. Seeing places like this really brings history to life. There is a real attempt at this national monument to show both sides of the story, from the perspective of the Native Americans as well as the troops of the US Calvary. The rest of the time, since my last blog entry, we have been staying in a campground way down in a canyon at a town called Gardiner, Wyoming. The town is at the northern entrance to Yellowstone National Park. We spent about 8 hours a day for 3 full days exploring Yellowstone. Until we did this, I had no idea just how BIG Yellowstone National Park was. We drove about 550 km in the Jetta over the 3 days. [...]

And so the trip continues. It is now day 15. I will fill you in on what we’ve been up to since my last post. September 10 was day 10. We drove in tandem for 90 miles to Three Flags RV Park near Rapid City, SD. After we set up, Bill took the car to the welder he had spoken to. About 6 hours and many $$$’s later, we had a fixed tow vehicle. We spent the next 4 days at this campsite which was in the middle of a big field right beside the highway and a railroad track. But it really was fine. Little traffic noise could be heard inside the RV and the train only went by twice while we were there. Days 11 to 13 we explored the area. This included Mount Rushmore National Monument, Keystone SD, and the very scenic highways including Needles Byway and The Wildlife Loop around the BlackHills. That’s where we saw bison, donkeys, antelope and deer. We put many miles on the Jetta including a trip to Deadwood where Wild Bill Hickok was killed and to Belle Fourche where a monument depicts The Centre of the Nation. Yesterday, day 14, we [...]

Hi again everyone. Here we are on day 9 of our travels. Most of days 5, 6, 7 and 8 were spent on the road. The country side changed daily from hilly to flat as we moved from Iowa into South Dakota and the crops changed from corn to grassland. The weather was sunny most of the time but the winds picked up making Bill’s driving more challenging; especially in conjunction with highway construction which seems to be everywhere. We spent one night at an ownership park called Cutty’s near Des Moines, Iowa which had about 700 sites. It was ok but rather crowded. We plan to stay there again on the way home. On day 6 we travelled into South Dakota and stopped for the night at Red Barn RV Park in a tiny town called Tea, SD just south of Sioux Falls. We had planned to go into the city but bad weather nixed that idea. Day 7 found us at the R and R Campground in Mitchell, SD home of the Corn Palace which we had visited with the family on our previous trip about 20 years ago. The Corn Palace has been decorated with murals made from [...]

Here we are near the end of our 4th day out. We have driven from St. Catharines to Amana, Iowa which is a distance of about 770 miles. Day 1 was a delayed start. Although Bill got up at 4:30 am to insure we could leave as scheduled, we had to stop in Hamilton for a quick recharge of our air conditioner. The 11 am appointment meant very little as we didn’t even get in until 2 pm. After they decided they could not fix it as thought, we left about 4:30 pm with an ok fix. Unfortunately, we had a 267 mile trip ahead of us that day. Arriving at our campground (Walnut Hills Family Campground just west of Flint, Michigan) about 11:30 pm, we woke up the camp hosts (This was at the suggestion of the reservation clerk). The host very graciously escorted us to our site. Needless to say, we slept in the next day and didn’t get away until about 10:30 am. Sept. 2 was day 2. A drive of 291 miles through rain, construction and a wrong turn leading to extra miles…However, Leisure Lake RV Resort near Joliet, Illinois was lovely. We enjoyed a quiet [...]

Bill Gates uses some magical sort order on the routes that one imports into Micro$oft Streets & Trips. Unfortunately, the order specified by Bill is NOT the order that I want. Nowhere could I find a resource to fix this problem ……. so I wrote one. The resource can be accessed (without charge) at my web page … www.my-teacher.ca . Documentation is pretty thin, so I prepared a video describing how to operate the program. The instructional video can be reached here. Basically, you import data from a spreadsheet into Streets & Trips. The NAME of the items contain a numeric prefix describing the order that your route is to follow. You then export this data into a GPX file, upload the GPX file to the program residing on my web page. It will sort the data, attach the sorted file to an email that gets sent to you. Finally, you import the sorted file back into a blank Streets & Trip map. The data appears in YOUR order….not in Bill Gates order. I hope that you find this tool useful. If it works for you, let me know. IF IT DOESN’T WORK FOR YOU, let me know as well…. so that I [...]
